Over the past couple of years, the egg cleanse trend has blown up on TikTok and the world wide web. An egg cleanse ritual is even performed in the new Chilling Adventures of Sabrina by her aunts, Hilda and Zelda.
One might think this is a new, modern practice but in reality, the egg cleanse dates back centuries. And its origins are spread out across cultures. Eggs are a powerful tool in any witch’s or magical practitioner’s repertoire. So, in this article, I’ll explain what exactly an egg cleanse ritual is, where it originates from, the benefits of doing one, and how to perform your own egg cleanse at home (for yourself, family members, or friends).
First, Why Are Egg Cleansings A Thing?
I am one that believes certain practices of our ancestors are passed down over generations, and certain practices are just ingrained in our DNA and spiritual memory. Either way, we have our ancestors to thank for these powerful rituals. One such ritual is called the egg cleanse. We all know how important it is to cleanse yourself and your space regularly. But why is an egg used as a purifying tool?
First, we have to look at the magick of the egg itself. Typically when we say “eggs”, we are mostly referring to a chicken’s egg. But there are eggs from other animals that can also be used in magick and cleansing rituals. However, we recommend sticking to the chicken variety. And here’s why – the chicken in and of itself has a gods-given ability to keep evil at bay. Many cultures and traditions believe chickens “scratch” away evil spirits and/or scare any that are near. So, yes! It is good luck and a great natural warding device to have chickens in your yard or on your property.
Eggs = Protection
That being said, eggs by default are also protective. But think of their actual physical make-up: the egg yolk and whites are contained in a hard, protective shell. Egg magick is both protective and can be used to increase fertility. Eggs actually have a long history of being used in folk magic from various traditions including African diasporic, Mesoamerican, Romani, and German Folk Magic, and were even used by the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Celtic Druids.
Oomancy is a form of ancient divination in which the individual “reads” eggs as messages from the gods. There were various ways of doing this including cracking an egg into the water and reading the pattern of the whites and yolk. Some people read the lines, cracks, and color of eggshells. I know today we have mass-produced chicken eggs that are all mostly of pure white color. But back in the day, and on free-ranging farms, eggs took on different colors, and shapes and some were even speckled.
Speaking of eggshells, when you’re done reading them, you can use them as flying vehicles. Witches in Medieval Times were said to fly around on empty eggshells, as were fairies. Most people discarded their eggshells quickly so as not to encourage mischievous magic-makers from taking them.
What are the key benefits of doing an egg cleanse?
An egg cleanse ritual can help to alleviate our suffering and heal our minds, bodies, and souls through clearing and cleansing.
It can help to heal and eliminate:
- Energetic blockages in your chakras
- Bad luck
- Fears and phobias
- Negative energy and negative spirits
- Toxic energy
- Bad karma
- Physical and mental health problems
- Stress and anxiety
Not only can it help cleanse your aura and body, but it can also help clear your home.
Everything is energy
Every day, we unknowingly collect different energies, the same way that objects do. This happens 24/7 from the places we go, the people we interact with, and the situations we find ourselves in. Some of these energies are positive, while others are not so good.
You’ll already be aware of this process. For example, when you spend a day at work with a certain person and you come home feeling anxious, drained, and closed. You’ve collected negative energy. The opposite is when you spend an evening with a group of people, and you walk away feeling inspired, uplifted, and like you can be and achieve anything. Here, you’ve collected positive energy. Both of these scenarios are the result of the energy we’ve been exposed to and the effect it has had within. This is why it matters so much where we go and who we surround ourselves with each day.
Any time you feel out of balance and need to restore your energy and find harmony, you can do an egg cleanse. Not only will this help clear away negative energy, but it will also make space for new opportunities and good fortune to come in. You’ll be left feeling calmer and lighter.
There is no bad time to perform an egg cleanse ritual. Egg cleanses are good all year round. However, it’s common to do one if you’ve had a string of bad luck, you’ve become ill, you’re about to embark on a big new project, you’ve just gone through a breakup, or you’ve made a conscious choice to distance yourself from certain people (friends or even family).
Note: Although an egg cleanse ritual can work wonders for you, it shouldn’t be used as a replacement for visiting a doctor if you’re unwell.
How to Do An Egg Cleansing Ritual
What You’ll Need:
- 1 egg (at room temperature)
- Copal, frankincense, garden sage, or palo santo (to burn)
- A white candle
- A small white cloth
- A small bowl of salted, lemony water
- A glass of water
You can either arrange your tools on your altar, on a white cloth, or on any clean, sturdy surface. Make sure you have everything you need before you get started so you can perform your ritual without interruptions. You don’t want to break your focus or flow or energy!
- An egg cleanse ritual is best performed at the start of something (the beginning of the week, month, witch’s year) or when the moon is waning.
- It can be done at any time of the day.
- Make sure the room you’re using has a window so that negative energy can leave.
- Do your egg cleanse alone unless you’re performing it on someone else.
How to do an egg cleansing on yourself or another person:
1. Place your items on your altar
Arrange all your items on your sacred altar or white cloth so that you’re ready to perform your ritual. Ground into the present moment—be here, now.
2. Cleanse your space
Before performing any kind of ritual, it’s important to cleanse your space so that no stagnant energy interferes with the magic and potential of your intentions.
The egg cleanse ritual usually involves burning copal. If you can’t find copal, frankincense is a good substitution. And if garden sage or palo santo are all you have (typically used for cleansing before many rituals), these will do just fine.
Make sure your windows are open, light your incense, then walk around the room, making sure you reach all the corners and crevices.
You can even pass the egg through the smoke.
3. Wash the egg
The first step of any egg cleanse ritual is to wash your egg. Give it a gentle, light rinse in your bowl of salted lemon water. When you’re done, remove it from the water and place it on a cloth.
4. Connect to the Universe
Next, light your candle and connect to the Universe, Source, Spirit, or Goddess (whatever your preferred name is). Ask the Universe to help you use this egg as a vessel to clear yourself of any negative energy that may be stuck. Pass your egg over the candle flame a few times while you do this.
5. Set your intention for this egg cleanse
During any ritual, whether it’s a full moon ritual or a summer solstice ritual, take time to set an intention. What do you want to achieve from this ritual? Why are you doing it?
Hold the egg in your hands and bring it to your heart as you think of your intention. Once you’ve got it, repeat it out loud. You might even want to speak directly to the egg.
Here are some examples of intentions you can swipe:
- “Through this cleanse, I release all the stagnant, stuck energy within.”
- “After this ritual, I will be cleansed of negative energy and ready to welcome in something better.”
- “With this egg cleanse, my luck will change.”
6. Roll the egg over your body
Now it’s egg action time!
- Next, start at the top of the head and gently roll the egg in counter-clockwise circles around the crown of the head, if you can close your eyes and focus on your intention do so throughout the process. I like to imagine the negative energy is being “picked up” by the egg, sort of like the egg is a little vacuum. If you’re doing this for someone else, have them close their eyes and explain to them what to visualize.
- Then move the egg down the back of the head with your egg, then around to the face.
- Move down the neck, over the left arm down to the fingers, then to the right arm down to the fingers. Continue in circles. Follow with the chest, stomach, hips, buttocks, thighs, all the way down the legs.
- Don’t forget to rub the egg over the soles of the feet. This is an important step some folks forget.
- For the next step, you can do one of two things: crack the egg over a cup of water and read the yolk and white patterns. Or place the egg under your (or the person’s) bed or on the altar for 24 hours, then crack it and read it after (see the next section for how to read an egg cleanse meaning).
- After you’ve done the reading of the egg yolk and whites, get rid of the contents immediately.
PLEASE NOTE: if the evil eye or malefic magick is suspected, don’t crack the egg right away to read it but place it under your (or the person’s) bed for at least 24 hours. Then continue with the steps below (cracking in water and reading).
Beware of gypsy scammers
Before I show you how to do your own egg cleanse ritual at home, I want to talk about the “Great Egg Trick.”
What is it?
Roaming gypsies often do phony egg readings for people to trick them into handing over money. They’ll inject an egg with whatever they want beforehand (blood, insects, bile, metal, etc.) and then tell the client this represents a terrible curse in their life. They’ll claim they can remove this curse in exchange for money. Or, they’ll pretend to cast a spell on the money to remove the curse, then pretend to destroy the money, but it’ll always somehow end up in their pocket.
So beware of scams like this if you ever get an egg cleanse or psychic reading from anyone.
Reading Egg Cleanse Meanings
Once you’ve rubbed the egg all over your body, the next step in the egg cleanse process is to read the egg yolk, whites, and the patterns therein. Like so:
8. Crack your egg over a clear glass, half-filled with water.
9. Let the yolk and whites settle, then gaze through the glass from the side.
10. You’ll begin to see shapes, patterns, strings, colors, and more. Here’s how to interpret different meanings behind your egg cleanse.
When reading an egg cleanse, the yolk is representative of you and the whites symbolize others.
Patterns, Symbols, and Colors in Your Egg Cleanse Cup
If you notice no unusual shapes, smells, or anything else and the water is clear, this suggests that if there was some stagnant energy or conflict within you, it has been cleansed. There’s no need to do another cleanse anytime soon.
Cloudy water that doesn’t smell and doesn’t have any blood in it may symbolize a loss of energy through a hole in your aura. You may be experiencing nightmares, severe fear, anxiety, or even PTSD. You could also be experiencing a string of bad luck.
If the yolk has sunk to the bottom of the glass, this symbolizes that some heavy stuff has been cleansed from you.
A floating yolk suggests there’s still an unresolved issue, and it’s recommended that you do another egg cleanse ritual sometime soon.
This may indicate that you are moving too quickly when making decisions. This is your call to slow down.
Negative energy is slowly dissipating, and better times are coming your way.
You have an enemy, or there is a specific person in your life who is the cause of much of your negative energy.
Tiny bubbles could mean that negative energy has been absorbed into the egg (a good thing), but it could also mean that maybe you’ve been more tired or irritated recently due to stress.
Big bubbles symbolize a cage—is there a situation you feel trapped in right now?
There may be someone in your life who is jealous of you, or you may feel entangled in a sticky situation that is bringing you negativity and confusion.
Maybe a current or past co-dependent relationship has been trying to sap your energy.
Pointy needles or nails
There may be a dark curse that was put on you, either in this lifetime or a past one.
A bad smell or blood in the egg
You may be ill or about to experience some kind of physical or mental illness. Any blood or changes in color could also suggest that a curse has been placed on you.
You’ve Read Your Egg Cleanse Meaning, Now What?
And that’s your egg cleanse ritual almost complete. The final step is to dispose of the egg. Whatever you do, do not eat the egg! I know it might seem like a waste of a good egg, but it’s all mixed up in water now anyway. Plus, all the negative vibes that you cleansed from your body are in that egg, so it’s really a bad egg now. If you eat it, you’ll just be flooding your system with that toxicity again.
A lot of people will suggest flushing the egg down the toilet, but the best way to get rid of it is to simply wash it down the kitchen sink and bury the eggshell in the earth so it can be composted.
I realize that this ritual might seem a little wacky, especially if you’ve never heard of it before. But it’s very similar to reading tea leaves or visiting a fortune teller or healer. The most important thing with any kind of ritual or magick is believing in what you’re doing. So if you believe an egg cleanse can help clear you of some toxic energy or disturbance, that’s all that matters. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. And that belief makes the crucial difference between your intentions manifesting or not.
