Mabon Reflections: Honoring Balance and Letting Go

Mabon, also known as the Autumn Equinox, is the second harvest and a sacred pause between light and dark. It’s the day when the hours of sunlight and darkness are equal, reminding us of the importance of balance.

For me, Mabon is less about perfection and more about noticing where I’m carrying too much, where I need to let go, and where I can celebrate the abundance already in my life. It’s about honoring what has grown (in the world and within myself) while preparing gently for the darker, quieter months ahead.

Reflections for the Equinox

Take some time to sit with these questions in your journal, or simply meditate on them:

  • Where in my life am I holding too tightly?
  • What can I release now that no longer serves me?
  • What lessons have I harvested this year?
  • Where do I need more balance – in my energy, relationships, or inner world?
  • What abundance can I celebrate, even if it’s small?

Mabon Rituals

1. Balance Candle Ritual

  • Place one white candle and one black candle side by side
  • Light them together, honoring the balance of light and dark
  • As they burn, reflect on areas of your life where you need harmony

2. Release & Gratitude Ceremony

  • Write down something you want to let go of on one piece of paper
  • On another, write down something you are deeply grateful for
  • Burn the first (safely, in a fireproof dish) to release it into the universe
  • Keep the gratitude note on your altar as a reminder of abundance

3. Nature Walk Offering
Take a walk in the crisp September air. Collect fallen leaves, acorns, or stones to decorate your altar.
Don’t forget to leave a small offering of bread, nuts, or seeds outside to honor the earth’s generosity and to give back to the creatures preparing for winter ♥

Mabon Altar Ideas

Decorate your altar with symbols of the harvest and balance:

  • Apples, pomegranates, pumpkins, or squash
  • A bowl of nuts, seeds, or corn
  • Leaves in fiery autumn colors
  • Crystals like citrine (abundance), amethyst (spiritual balance), and obsidian (release)
  • Two candles – black and white, or gold and dark brown
  • A small scale or two objects of equal weight to represent balance

Kitchen Witchery for Mabon

Food is magic, and the equinox is perfect for gathering around the table. Cook with intention, bless your meals, and celebrate the season.

Apple Crisp
Bake apples with cinnamon, oats, and honey. Each bite is a reminder of warmth, sweetness, and the cycles of life.

Roasted Root Vegetables
Carrots, potatoes, parsnips, and beets roasted with rosemary and thyme. Grounding, earthy, and perfect for anchoring yourself in the season.

Mulled Cider
Warm apple cider with cloves, cinnamon, and orange slices. Sip slowly and set intentions for balance and peace.

Mabon whispers: it’s okay to let go. The world is shifting into darkness, and so are we. This isn’t something to fear, but to honor. Balance is not about staying perfectly centered, but about moving with the seasons, the ups and downs, and finding your own rhythm in the in-between.

So light your candles, pour your cider, decorate your altar with autumn’s gifts, and remember:
You are allowed to release.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to celebrate abundance in whatever form it shows up.

That is the true magic of Mabon ♥
