Sleep Like a Baby: My Ritual for Falling (and Staying) Asleep
Let me tell you, I’ve had more restless nights than full moons. Falling asleep? A struggle. Staying asleep? A bigger struggle. My brain loves throwing surprise parties at 2 a.m., complete with overthinking, anxiety, and a rerun of every awkward thing I’ve ever said in 2002.
After trying melatonin, podcasts, doomscrolling (don’t), and even counting sheep (weirdly stressful), I realized I needed a full bedtime ritual, something that honored my mind, body, and spirit. Not just tips and hacks, but a full-on nighttime routine that makes sleep sacred again.
So, here’s my personal evening ritual for actual rest, grounded, magical, and 100% real.
My Witchy Night Ritual That Changed Everything
2 Hours Before Bed: Set the Vibe
- Dim the lights – no harsh overheads allowed. Lamps, candles, or fairy lights only.
- Goodbye screens – your phone lies to your brain. It says “party time,” not “rest time.”
- Brew a sleepy herbal tea (I’ll share my favorite recipe below).
Optional spellwork: Set a simple intention. Try “I surrender to peace” or “Rest renews me.” Whisper it like you mean it.
1 Hour Before Bed: Cleanse & Soothe
This is where I wash the day off, physically and energetically.
- Hot shower or bath with a few drops of lavender essential oil.
- Moisturize slowly with a rich body butter while playing soft music (or nature sounds).
- Cozy up in your favorite pajamas. If they feel like a hug, you chose well.
30 Minutes Before: Mind-Body Quiet Time
I stop talking. I stop scrolling. I just be.
- Light incense or a calming candle (frankincense and sandalwood are great).
- Open the window in your bedroom, let the cold in: your sleep will thank you.
Here’s a witchy truth backed by science: sleeping in a cool room helps your body fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Your core temperature naturally drops as you prepare for sleep, and keeping the room chilly supports that process. I usually crack open the window about 30 minutes before bed, just enough to let the fresh air in and bring the temperature down. Bonus: it makes getting under the covers feel extra luxurious. Trust me, it’s a small change that makes a big difference.
0 Minutes Before: Clear the Mental Clutter
This is when I turn inward.
- Write down 3 things I’m grateful for and 1 thing I’m letting go of.
- Repeat this mantra until I feel it settle into my body:
“I am safe. I am calm. Sleep is my sanctuary.”
- Do 5–10 minutes of gentle stretching or yoga (especially if you’ve been stressed).
- Practice 4-7-8 breathing: Inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8. Four rounds. It’s like a sedative without the pills.

My Favorite Natural Sleepytime Tea
This blend hits just right: earthy, floral, and knocks me into dreamland naturally.
Ingredients:
- 1 tsp dried chamomile
- 1 tsp lemon balm
- ½ tsp lavender buds (just a little – too much is overpowering)
- Optional: ½ tsp passionflower or skullcap
- Honey or maple syrup to taste
- A dash of vanilla or cinnamon if you’re feeling fancy
How-To:
- Steep herbs in freshly boiled water (covered) for 5–7 minutes.
- Strain and sweeten if desired.
- Sip slowly, holding your mug with both hands like a spell anchor. Breathe. Let it soothe.
Natural Sleep Hacks I Swear By
- Magnesium (either as a supplement or a spray on your legs).
- Essential oils – lavender on your pillow, cedarwood in your diffuser.
- Cool, dark bedroom (17–19°C is ideal).
- White noise or rain sounds (nature’s lullaby).
- Zero caffeine after 4 p.m. and zero arguing after 8 p.m. (seriously, protect your peace).
🌧️ Bonus tip: Rain and Nature Sounds = Instant Calm
One of the simplest, most magical things I do is play rain sounds or gentle nature ambience as I wind down. There’s something about the rhythm of falling rain, a crackling campfire, or a distant thunderstorm that calms the nervous system almost instantly. It’s like being rocked by the Earth herself.
Here’s a playlist I made and love:
It’s on Spotify, and you can play it on loop all night. No lyrics, just peaceful, grounding soundscapes that help me drift off gently.
Sleep is not just a biological need; it’s a soul need. You don’t have to earn it. You don’t have to “deserve” rest. You are allowed to simply stop, soften, and trust your body to hold you.
This ritual didn’t fix my life overnight, but it taught me how to care for myself when the world wouldn’t slow down. And maybe that’s the most magical thing of all.
If there’s one thing I believe in, it’s this: Rest is radical. And you deserve it ♥
